Pallet Labelling
Pallets are typically labelled with shipping and logistics information, using a Label Printer Applicator (LPA) for automatic application, or manually using a Label Printer. Either method will produce a fully compliant Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) barcode label, with a combination of human-readable text and scannable symbologies. It is important to have retailer and GS1 compliant pallet labelling to avoid human intervention in automated retailer warehouses and to avoid any retailer imposed penalties.
Retailers are also working to eliminate other causes of non-compliance with pallet barcode labelling. Matthews have produced a useful guide to assist in producing a compliant SSCC label to meet retailer requirements.
Compliant SSCC labelling
LPA’s are typically installed at, or immediately after, the pallet stretch wrap station. When installed at the stretch wrapper, it’s common to interlock the LPA with the stretch wrapper, in order to apply an SSCC label on each fork entry side of the pallet. An unattended scanner can be used to read each carton barcode, and from that information the LPA will print the appropriate pallet label on each fork entry side.
SSCC pallet-labelling systems can be integrated with iDSnet. Matthews can also integrate pallet-labelling systems with many other business systems, such as SAP for real-time production recording. Synchronising pallet labelling and carton labelling improves a business’s overall efficiency and item traceability. Proper pallet labelling can also improve warehouse control. For instance, a scanner on a forklift means when that pallet is picked up off the end of the line, the stock can booked into the business’s WMS system.
