The most prevalent coding need in the fresh produce industry is date coding — Use-by dates — on plastic or film packaging. Barcodes are also often needed. The most common technology used in this industry is a thermal transfer overprinter (TTO). Barcode labels also need to be applied to packaged produce in punnets using Label Printer Applicators (LPA) or, in the case of pre-printed labels, Label Applicators (LA).
