Charlie’s Group is a niche producer of pure juices in Australasia. Established in New Zealand in 1999, the first product rolled off the Australian lines in 2008. It exports to some 15 countries, with South-East Asia a focus.
The company manufactures and markets a range of premium “not from concentrate” and organic beverages. Beginning just with orange juice, there are now four product ranges under the Charlie's brand — juices, smoothies, quenchers and water — along with the Phoenix Organic label (Charlie’s bought this organic pioneer in 2007).
In addition to its pure products, the company’s quirky branding has also helped garner a strong following. To capitalise on this, general manager of the Australian operations, Kym Baldock, says, they had long-term goals in Australia to increase presence in the route market and to the major supermarket chains.
“It was also part of our long-term plans to increase efficiencies as well as our production throughput — and we’ve done that,” Kym says.
They needed world class coding and labelling technology to cope with increased production.
