Primary GTIN barcodes that scan first time, every time
Whatever your retail product, Matthews has the printing solution to make sure only the best quality barcodes leave your factory doors.
A primary GTIN barcode is a must-have for any product being sold through retail stores. The barcode comprises the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), which uniquely identifies the product, represented as a number and symbol. There are four common GTIN barcodes:
- GTIN-13 – The most common barcode for retail products. Can also include variable measure weight and price information
- GTIN-8 – Used for products that are too small to accommodate a GTIN-13
- GTIN-12 – Used for products exported for sale to US and Canada
- GTIN-14 – Used on non-retail units e.g. cartons
With experience working across a wide range of industries, our experts can help you select the right solution for your unique product and manufacturing environment – whether that’s a Label Applicator, Label Printer Applicator or Thermal Transfer Overprinter.

Reduce scanning errors
Retailers are becoming ever more intolerant of product barcodes that aren’t up to scratch and cause scanning errors within distribution centres and at the checkout. Some even impose penalties on manufacturers whose barcodes fail to perform.
As a GS1 Strategic Alliance Partner, Matthews doesn’t only provide the barcode printing technology, we provide expert knowledge and advice to ensure your barcodes consistently comply with GS1 standards. So you can build strong, long-lasting relationships with your trading partners.
