TriMas Corporation supplies vehicle manufacturers and after-market customers with a range of high quality accessories, including roof racks, hitch receivers, weight-distribution hitches and protection bars. The company has also been a leading Australian manufacturer of towing systems for more than 50 years.
Major brands in the group — which has plants in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane — are Rola, Thetford, Trailboss and Hayman Reese. Cutting-edge computer technology for design and rapid prototyping has allowed Rola roof racks to fit the widest range of vehicles, while export market opportunities have given the product range international recognition.
TriMas’s Keysborough plant (in Victoria) houses the new Rola Evolution Cell, which recently launched Fit Kits for the top 50 cars in Australia.
Mike Lyons, TriMas’s Continuous Improvement Process Engineer, says, “Most cars required unique straps for front and back, resulting in 100 similar — but different — strap profiles. With each also being 60mm wide, we were concerned about the risk of packing the wrong strap in the wrong kit.”
Production and Quality departments developed a profile for the camera to reliably identify each part. After researching capabilities, TriMas chose iQVision and Matthews Australasia to work with them on the rest of the solution.
