Anika Natural Products

INDUSTRY PHARMACEUTICAL / CONTRACT MANUFACTURING
PRODUCT LINX CJ400

Background

Anika Natural Products toll manufactures a wide variety of natural and certified organic skincare products. Opening in 1995, the niche operator has grown around 35% per annum for the past few years. A carbon-neutral operator, Anika doesn’t produce its own branded line, keeping its “customer only” focus and accredited facilities as a commercial point of difference. The small family business produces for brands that export to the UK, Europe, America and parts of Asia, with one client about to launch into the Middle East.

Situation

Anika invested in tube-sealing equipment to package a client’s newly launched product. While the ultrasonic tube-sealer has up-to-date technology, it could only code on one side of the tube’s end. However, Anika’s client legally needed coding on both sides of the crimped end.

Process Needs

The coder needed to be able to fit into Anika’s existing production line, and work with the new tube sealer.

Business Needs

Hygiene is paramount in Anika’s ISO 9001:2008 – Quality licensed facilities. The coder needed to produce print of excellent quality to match the client’s high-end pharmaceutical product and meet the export- destination country’s legal coding requirements. Anika needed a coding solution very quickly to meet its client’s needs, but also one that would be useful to it in the future, rather than solely a short-term fix.

Solution

Anika already had two existing coders (a Linx 7300 and Linx 4900) from Matthews Australasia that it was very pleased with, so approached the coding specialist for a quick solution.

Matthews recommended a Linx CJ400 continuous inkjet (CIJ ) printer.

Outcome

The Linx CJ400 was installed and operating within a week, allowing Anika to properly service its customer without too much lag time.

It is using the coder to put a batch code and a best-before date onto the crimped base of little plastic tubes. The print-head is mounted onto the tube sealer in between the filling and sealing station.

Staff find the machine simple to use and maintain.

Anika is also impressed with the solution’s long-term applicability to the business, rather than it just meeting a short-term — albeit urgent — need.

“The machine was supplied and installed within a week — it was great because we could meet that customer’s requirements again, and, it’s a really cool little machine.”

“The support we get from Matthews is fantastic. The fact there’s local service here too [Brisbane] is also an important factor for us. We’re really happy with all three solutions and their impact on our business: my aim is to level back to a 25% per annum growth, and we’re set up for that with the equipment we’ve got.”
