Continuous Small Character Inkjet Printers (CIJ)

A CIJ printer is a non-contact printing method where electrically charged droplets of ink (only half the diameter of a human hair) are expelled from a printhead nozzle at a rate of up to 120,000 droplets per second and accurately propelled onto a substrate.

This makes continuous printers ideal for printing little codes at high-speed lines and irregular products across a host of substrates and sectors, including food and beverage, grocery, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and timber – to name a few.

Advantages of Linx CIJ date coders:

  • Able to code on a wide variety of packaging sizes, shapes and substrates
  • Wide range of printing speeds
  • Wide range of ink colours and contrast available
  • Able to print on the product or end-of-line secondary packaging (such as carton and tray coding)
  • Easily networked in to other packaging line equipment using our iDSnet software solution

How do Continuous Inkjet Printers work?

Continuous inkjet (CIJ) printers work by pumping a mixture (ink and solvent) past a piezoelectric crystal (that breaks the stream into individual droplets) whereby a charge electrode imparts a specific electrical charge onto each droplet.

  • These charged droplets are then propelled past a deflector plate that deflects the droplets (in varying angles depending on the voltage and speed of the droplet) to specifically be positioned and swiftly dry onto a product or products packaging surface. The combination of several drops can form an alphanumeric character or basic graphic onto a product.
  • If no charge is imparted onto a droplet (by the charge electrode) then the droplet is collected by a gutter typically at the end of the printhead and recycled for reuse. This continuous motion of charged and non-charged droplets characterises the name Continuous Inkjet Printer and is regarded as non-contact as the ink mixture is propelled across a gap (called the throw distance) without the need for the product to be in direct contact with the CIJ’s Printhead.
  • Most solvents utilised are volatile and tend to evaporate rapidly upon contact with the products surface. The speed of drying depends on a range of environmental, surface and chemical factors and ink selection should also review other properties required such as abrasion, temperature or chemical resistance to ensure applicability.

Manage coders with ease

Matthews’ range of Linx industrial small character Continuous Inkjet Printers are renowned globally for their ease of use, reliability and low cost of ownership. It comes down to their robust, sealed printhead, which is perfectly suited to harsher production environments. Plus the printhead has an auto-flush feature, meaning minimal downtime and operator intervention so your lines keep moving. A Linx CIJ printer is at least IP55 rated, and operate without the need for factory air. CIJs are a small character inkjet printer, making inline printers the perfect option for when you have small text to print onto your product.

Continuous inkjet printers require regular maintenance and supply of ink and solvent consumables – find out how Matthews can support you.
