Cosmetic Innovation Australia contract manufactures 100% natural and pure mineral cosmetics for Australian and overseas on-sellers. Co-founder and director Callum Young says the company has led the global natural mineral makeup explosion in the past decade, having founded the Australian mineral and natural cosmetic market in the 1990s.

Product demand has continuously increased since it began making the pure mineral cosmetics in 1996. The company boasts regular domestic and international clients, including major brands available in global and local retail chains such as Myer, Priceline, David Jones and various health food stores.

Callum says as demand for the cosmetics intensified, the company needed a more sophisticated way of keeping batch records, which can be customised to meet clients’ needs.

“With products being shipped internationally, as well as interstate in much larger volumes — at faster rates — our operational challenges were an exciting opportunity to further development.

BACKGROUND

Cosmetic Innovations Australia contract manufactures 100% natural and pure mineral cosmetics for Australian and overseas onsellers. Product demand has continuously increased since the company began operations 1996. Domestic and international clients now include major brands that are available in global and local retail chains such as Myer, Priceline, David Jones and various health food stores.

SITUATION

Clients generally ship their cosmetic jars to Cosmetic Innovations, which then fills the jars, codes them, and ships them back. The client receives a finished product, bar coded and ready to sell.

To cope with rapid expansion and the challenges of having to ship products interstate and internationally in much larger volumes and at faster rates, Cosmetic Innovations needed to improve internal quality control and reduce production lead times. The company was also looking for a more sophisticated way of maintaining batch records that could be customised to meet client specifications.

BUSINESS NEEDS

Flexibility

Labelling and coding information that could be quickly and easily tailored to client requirements and the contract job at hand.

Process Needs

Cosmetic Innovations wanted a high quality and high speed label printing and application to speed up the production process, but without compromising retail-presentation standards. The company had a manual labelling machine that needed an operator to physically put one jar in at a time. This machine could not be automated.

Cosmetic Innovations also wanted facilities for quality control, such as the ability to keep a record of individual customer’s batches.

Solution

Before any research, Cosmetic Innovations was just seeking a coding machine, intending to keep its manual labeller. However, Matthews’ solution was to cater for current and future needs, so the company had solid processes in place that would easily cope with continued growth.

Matthews provided an Novexx XLS 2x label applicator (LA), which labels the cosmetic jars with product information and a Linx 4900 small character continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer at the end of the production line to print batch coding for quality control.

Matthews’ ability to provide a solution that had a coder and (automatic) label applicator on a conveyor was an advantage to Cosmetic Innovations.

Outcome

The Novexx's dispensing speed of up to 40m/min has allowed Cosmetic Innovations to significantly speed up turnaround times by labelling higher volumes at higher speed.

The Linx 4900 CIJ printer’s ease of use and flexibility is providing quality control benefits for both the company and its clients. Cosmetic Innovations’ clients are now able to maintain a batch register that has been customised to their own record-keeping requirements.
