Fully compliant Shipper Coding and Labelling
With retailers’ rules for barcode compliance becoming increasingly strict, manufacturers need to ensure their shipper cartons include the right barcode, and additional information, in the right format.
GS1 Australia coordinates the use and allocation of all retail and trade barcodes in Australia, and retailers require suppliers to have GS1 compliant barcodes on primary and secondary packaging. As a GS1 Strategic Alliance Partner, Matthews can help you choose the right barcodes and ensure your shipper barcode labels are fully compliant with GS1 standards and retailer requirements.
Barcode formats are typically ITF-14 or GS1-128. We can help you choose the right coding technology to print barcodes with your shipper artwork, where you have a dedicated carton for each product (or SKU) you manufacture. Alternatively, you can choose to use a generic carton, with product specific information printed and applied to the carton within your production facility.
Shipper barcode labels
In addition to the shipper barcode, many major retailers require the outer packaging or shipper label to include human readable information, such as:
Depending upon the application, whether it is one carton label or more, (adjacent side or opposite side) carton labels can be applied automatically at high speeds (up to 70 labels per minute) on the packing line or off-line by hand.
- Vendor name and address
- Product name
- Net weight or number of units
- Date, batch or manufacturer traceability code
- Country of origin
Label Printer Applicators (LPA) can apply barcode labels on cartons with data captured from other systems within the business, such as Matthews’ iDSnet software solution.
Cartons can also be labelled with static information using a Label Applicator (LA) to apply pre-printed barcode labels, generally in ITF-14 format. And on low-volume production lines, cartons can labelled by hand, off-line with a Label Printer. We also provide mobile units allowing workers to print the information needed on the spot and apply the label by hand.
Shipper branding on demand
To meet the requirements of shelf ready packaging, shippers can now be branded using high resolution inkjet printers or thermal inkjet printers.
